"The Diversity King" - process

As promised - here are some pictures to tell you a little story about creation of the Diversity King illustrations :)

I started with making notes and drawing silly doodles while reading a printout of the text. Then I did some rough sketches in my sketchbook to play with different compositions, characters, etc. At the same time I sent some words describing my approach to selecting places that needed to be illustrated to author and soon got his "go" :)

After I had developed solutions to most of the problems I saw I did some rough but better rendered sketches and sent them to author with minor text comments. I received overall approval with some minor adjustments and started working on detailed drawings.

Then came inking, then play with color solutions, then scanning and more color play and then combining everything for the final art.

Sketchbook Run

I was organizing files and realized that apart from the fact that I haven't started scanning current sketchbook I have a big pile of things that I scanned but did not post here... So I intend to push bunch of stuff over the next couple of weeks.

The main reason is that I have some new things I want to share - and I think it's better to see how they developed and obtained shape, how they changed me and I changed them :)

So I will try to keep things in some sort of chronological order ;)

Illustration Friday: juggle

I juggle a lot of things - that's my curse and blessing - I rarely do one thing at a time - and this morning I was working on my "Illustration Friday" drawing, chatting with a colleague in the IM, drinking tea, making plan for the rest of the day and doing laundry and opening a huge file I am working on.

When it was time to move my stuff to the dryer I had to take a phone call and so was a few minutes late. Needless to say that when I got to the laundry room someone was already there. I saw the guilty look in the face and hands taking out my jeans and said something along the lines "it's ok - I knew that I was late" and just then realized that... well all my things are completely wet... She started her laundry without taking out mine... Probably because she was juggling too many things too ;)

I came home and drew this - just to let the steam out - it helped ;)

oh - and here is an original drawing about juggling things inside us - crazy thoughts and creatures that crawl inside our heads, attitudes, pains, happinesses, loves, ups, downs... all streaming through us.

Morning walk - fall is coming

Sketching during morning walk

Well, I don't remember meeting any pigs or even dogs during that walk but that's what I brought with me on the paper from the morning walk...

Illustration Friday: Wedding

We recently had a blast at our friend's wedding party and as a part of a present we brought a blooming hydrangea plant. Hence the relation to the Illustration Friday subject of this week.

Illustration Friday: momentum

I didn't have time to do something coherent this week - but had a chance to doodle for some time about how much momentum affects relationships, sport and flying ;)

"The Diversity King"

The Diversity King is a story written by Dr. Paul L. Gerhardt - it's about good things that come from diversity. I had a great time illustrating this feature and will be placing a short "process" report" here in my blog.

All final illustrations can be found on my web-site.

And you can browse part of the content from the lulu web-site:

Illustration Friday: Alphabet

I am a little late with the Alphabet post - but it's not a reason not to post ;)

So here is a story - alphabet and letters which are a part of it - are symbols. I always thought that Cat is for C - but no - it's for Blue because we know a cat who's name is blue ;) And Zebra is a cat - it's not a zebra - because it's on the same page with Tiger and has stripes too ;)

Don't ask me about J - it's just J.
