Sketchbook #93: Sketching in an Amazing Persimmon Orchard!
An amazing artist and my sketching friend Gay Kraeger invited me to draw in a persimmon orchard - it was one of the best days in November!
I love persimmons :)
This is not a secret - I love persimmons. I love to eat them when they are crunchy (not astringent!) and when they are slimy, I love to touch their shiny geometrical shapes and look at their colors, I love how skin becomes transparent skin (very ripe persimmon) and the way calyx is made of folds and waves inviting me to experiment with all sorts of mediums to draw them.
This was a great year for my persimmon-related joy as I got to share it with many friends - painting and drawing them from October through December - and here is a bunch of persimmon-related pages from my sketchbook!

December 2011: Treasures
We found a few very colorful trees in a neighborhood which we thought we new pretty well: pomegranate and persimmon :) Persimmon tree is in someone's yard do I got a chance to draw it - but no fruits were close enough to draw them individually (or eat them ;) And this little pomegranate was on the ground - though it's so tiny that we use it as a new year decoration :)
Persimmon Season is here!
It's a season - persimmon season! I get all the varieties I can find and eat them and draw them and enjoy them as decorations around my home and a reason to go out and look at the beautiful trees filled with luminous leaves and then bare branches with fruits on them. The image below was painted with gouache. But I draw them with ink and pencil and watercolor and whatever I can find during this season! I will assemble my favorites here of course!
Visiting a Magical Forest
Every year, Suhita Shirodkar and I make a pilgrimage to the Santa Cruz Mountains to see our friends in a wonderful community surrounding Gay Kraeger. And to draw an astonishing view of glowing persimmon trees. This time, the period between our last visit and this one was so packed with events for everyone that we ended up coming two weeks in a row to cover all the stories, share new materials, plans, and projects! One day was gloriously sunny, and we had a chance to draw persimmon trees, and another was magnificently foggy - so we ended up trying all sorts of art toys in a cozy, warm studio with a cup of tea while fog slowly melted around redwoods, which we drew. Persimmon Season 2023
As many of you know I am a big fan of persimmons. There are some people for whom persimmons are the first thing that comes to mind when I ask them what they think I draw the most :) And for several years now the peak of my persimmon season was a trip to paint the trees with foliage and fruits turning the best fall colors - with Gay Kraeger and Suhita Shirodkar. However this year stars did not align for this to happen so there is only one leaf and a handful of fruits scattered here and there around my sketchbook. Still - it was very orange!
