Yellow Chrysanthemums
I believe this was a potted flower destined to celebrate the Chinese New Year (Happy New Lunar Year of a Flaming Horse to all who celebrate!), but when I got it, it became a bright reminder to experiment with my art supplies! I have a whole bunch of small and large sketches of it already - and here is a first batch I wanted to share:
Four Attempts at Catching Camellia Colors.
On a day full of running errands, I stopped by my friend's place for a hug and a cup of chai. We ended up cutting a couple of branches from her camellia bush to sketch and then I took them home - they were my sketching companions for quite a bit.
What an amazingly layered flower - the structure of petals reminded me of tightly packed cones of the blue cedar tree and I definitely need to go back to these and try and figure out the color - even though I enjoyed mixing all of these none matches the slightly-transparent glowing orange hue of the camelia pink flowers.

The only way to figure some things out is to draw some flowers while you are thinking about them :)
Fall Flowers: Dahlias or Chrysanthemums?
I picked up a bouquet at the local farmer's market and enjoyed it for two whole weeks - as a splash of color during the early morning or an incredible shape of a shadow when the sun is high, as a glowing presence during sunset hours. I did not draw it as much as I thought I would but some pages of my everyday sketchbook are recording its presence.
However, when I decided to share these images a question struck me - were these Dahlias (as I thought) or Chrysanthemums? And, as it often happens, it put me on a whole new track of searching for information and hence I am publishing this post a good 5 days after preparing it :)
p.s. these were dahlias. I now know what to look for :)
Flowers in between other things and oil pastel experiment.
My last sketchbook had several projects going but in between I tried to draw my flowers - here they are. The last sketch is an experiment with using oil pastels in my sketchbook. I love oil pastel as much as I hate smudging it so it was an attempt to find a solution to both feelings. And I think I found it - good (non-smelling) fixative is an answer but it should be sold with a nice pack of patience.
Sketchbook #115: Trip to Europe - Part I - Ukraine - Flowers
During my week in Ukraine weather was changing rapidly and there were many gray and cold days, quite a bit of rain, though I don't actually remember it that way - what I do remember is that we had lots of flowers - all the time! We looked at flowers everywhere and purchased them almost daily - to celebrate, to remember, to gift and to paint.
Sketchbook #98: Peony
Often I have no clue how much time I have for the sketch - and then I try to make a little series - like with this bouquet of peonies.
It does not look that way - but this paper is actually exceptionally nice to work with. It's not watercolor friendly yet it does not fight a wash. It's perfect for markers and pencils leave a line that is just fat and juicy! I picket it us at a Japanese store - thin and creamy - perhaps I will not make a whole book out of it but definitely will use for the separate sketches :)

Sketchbook #96: Irises and calla flowers
I used washi tape to work on little gouache in my sketchbook and it worked out great :) And dry calla flowers are really cool to draw!
