May 2009: Trip to New York - part I

People waiting for this flight mostly looked like someone waiting for a bus. Some even greeted each other with a silent nod, some stopped to discuss "so you are going to NY again?" subject. Small bags, book or cell or computer - ready to use the moment they found a space to park their rear. May be it's me (I did not fly over the last few years) and this is how people usually look there - or may be it's the kind of flight - regular, convenient, cheap "read eye" to New York :)

Ten minutes after our plain took off - blankets, pillows and pens are out - for some it's time to sleep, for others - to draw before a nap ;) There was a little boy not far from me - he kept doodling with his aquadoodle (great thing for parents and kids - you paint with water on a piece of cloth - no mess, lots of fun, as soon as cloth is dry - doodle again!) long after his parents fell asleep ;)

My current sketchbook paper has some tooth and not too opaque - hence you kind-of can see previous exercise on the adapt theme in the texture and colors of this drawing ;)

Trying to work with pencil

Trying to work with pencil, originally uploaded by apple-pine.

I enjoy working with a simplest pencil possible. But I hate smudging - so I almost never use it to avoid being mad at smudges ;) But from time to time - I have to try something new. I got a pocket hair spray and did a few pages of pencil drawings and plein air sketches - like this one. Was happy with the feeling of pencil scratching the page. HATED the smell of my sketchbook afterwords :)

morning drawing

A. woke up rather early - and after a little struggle I realized that it will be better to get up and spend this morning with him and not under my pillow wishing for more sleep. He gave me two pencils (orange and blue - he is making color choices for me again:) and told me to draw - and that's what I did ;)

Windy day. Lots of cketches. Some words ;)

It was an incredibly windy day. Temperature was ok BUT WIND!!! I usually carry lots of things in case if we end up in San Francisco in the middle of summer - hat, wool sweater, warm socks, hoodie shirt ;) And this was the day we put EVERYTHING on ;) Gathered a nice group of kids in the park and had a wonderful day in spite the weather ;)
