100 Views of Silicon Valley: Mountain View Public Library and Little Free Library in Palo Alto.
I painted Mountain View Public Library and one of the "take a book - leave a book" - little free library houses that sprung in the valley during the last few years. It's a great system for book exchange - supported by neighborhoods and you can learn a lot about the people who live next to it if you look closely :)
100 Views of Silicon Valley
This is one of the mini gouaches I did recently while out on a quick urban sketch/meet with Suhita Shirodkar. This is a construction site of a brand new Google Campus in Mountain View.
As I looked at this page and at a few other mini-paintings on my table and in my sketchbooks I realized that I am collecting a nice set - and decided to give it a name and a goal. This is how "100 Views of Silicon Valley - a collection of iconic views in mini gouache paintings" were born.

October 2011: Lunch Run
Drawing after running is always a bit of a challenge - but always feels great :)
This was a very clear, winter-like morning - after first rains of the season. Even smog over the valley did not ruin the feeling - only made everything else look cleaner.October 2010: Park

Morning in the Shoreline park - watching water go form a calm blue reflecting every little brunch and wire into a violent gray: choppy and dark.
Jacaranda Tree Stop
I was a little early for an appointment and decided to hunt for a 20 min adventure on my way. Jacaranda trees are painting my life in a beautiful, lace lilac color - so the choice was obvious ;) I sketched a tree, took a picture of me sketching (while waiting for paint to dry a little more) and picked up a couple of flowers and seed pods to look closer.
I am trying to use some soapy water with watercolor since I ended up with a moleskine sketchbook again - it works much better - and bubbles are fun ;)

Trying to work with pencil
I enjoy working with a simplest pencil possible. But I hate smudging - so I almost never use it to avoid being mad at smudges ;) But from time to time - I have to try something new. I got a pocket hair spray and did a few pages of pencil drawings and plein air sketches - like this one. Was happy with the feeling of pencil scratching the page. HATED the smell of my sketchbook afterwords :)

Tree Cutting
It was a wonderful, very bright day with lots of noise and, as I found out later, wet grass - which I did not notice while sitting and sketching ;)
Park: belly scratcher
Nice warm day in March. This guy was sitting on the bench, tank pulled up and scratching his belly while chatting on the phone. His son was playing with the ball close to him and was much harder to capture ;)
Stabilo brush pen with some water over it. I was also playing with some Pentel brush pens while little guy made train out of all his shoes ;)
Waiting: porta potties
I was waiting - sitting on a curb next to the building site. Looking ar life's necessities. I had a blue ballpoint and a piece of scrap paper with me and had a good time ;)
Another park
More park sketches. I am playing with two pens: one is pilot precise begreen V5, another is STAEDTLER mars graphic dual marker. Both are not waterproof but, especially with thick, absorbent craft paper of this sketchbook cannot be "washed" away and sometimes are completely waterproof. I applied some water to these pages but it was quite some time after I did the drawing and I don't think it's visible :)

I enjoy remaining bare trees around me to see through to the shapes of houses and fences :) Rather cold and windy day in March.
Park: dads, kids, dogs
One of the best things I can do as a warm-up when I start sketching is pick someone on a swing and give them a couple of pages of attempts :) Results are usually not postable :) But they get me rolling :)
So when you get someone who is gently and very slowly pushing his toddler - it's hard not to sketch them properly ;)
This dog (below, right) was a monument. This is the only reasonably sketch of it that I have. But not because dog was moving too fast - it's the man who was with her (I do not thing it was her master) - he kept running around her so quickly it was hard to get anything but the tail right ;)
Saturday in the park
Lots of dads come with kids on Saturdays. Some are sitting quietly not sure what to do with these little people. Some are obviously trying to substitute lack of their attention to kids over the week. And some are doing fine :)
