Drawing shadows as a way to look.

One of my favorite ways to break the ice with people who claim that they can never draw anything resembling anything is to offer them to draw a shadow :) It is always better to start with something simple, but complex, like a palm with fingers or a flower. You will need a good source of light (be that a lamp or the sun) - which is a mood booster by itself :) And then you ask them to follow the contour of a shadow - it is a self-explanatory thing - and it does not take long. And then you have a page with a recognizable thing drawn just now! But even for people who do not need a pep-talk and for people who are good or even great at drawing, there is a lot of delight in tracing shadows, be that what you start with or add as a detail for a background.
For me, shadow is such a different way of looking at an object - it magically opens up dimensions despite actually flattening a 3D object into a 2D view. You can spend some time finding the angle that matches your current whims and follow shadows within shadows if you want more complexity with multiple sources of light. I enjoy collecting shadows when I am in a museum looking at sculptures, and sometimes (for example, on a Ruth Asawa show), objects move, so you have moving shadows to draw!
This agapanthus was fun to draw, but having that little shadow portrait made that page extra special for me - I understood some mistakes that I made after drawing the shadow too and it gave me more time with the flower - so I noticed more details and now am ready to go back and draw it again :)

Emotional Agapanthus Season

This year my agapanthus season begun with a lot of anger. Some people (whom I did not catch at it) started to bend long stems and as a result there were many almost broken agapanthuses. I tried to catch perpetrators, I tried to change my route or walk past without looking at the unhappy flowers, I tried to think why this makes me so sad and give it names. But at the end I started cutting dead yellow stalks and bent flowers and made bouquets to draw. This helped.

Inktober 2021: leftovers

I am making an alphabet of flowers for the Inktober this year. These will be my favorite flowers and since there are more days in October than letters in English Alphabet, some letters will gt two flowers. Or three :) I haven't decided as, apparently, I have more favorite flowers than there are days in October :)

In the process of creating these illustrations, I am left with some leftovers. I convert these into collages/experiments and messages to send to friends. Here are some agapanthuses:

Agapanthuses: a series of sketchbook pages

I've been enjoying drawing agapanthuses over and over again in my sketchbook lately.  I like working in series in general because looking is a process and by drawing objects/people/words/compositions repeatedly I can see them better. And with agapanthuses I also was trying all sorts of techniques that I am playing with at the moment: putting together printing, gouache, and crazy lines.

Agapanthus galore

This week was filled with agapanthus drawings. The end of the agapanthus season is here (even though today on my walk I found a cluster of plants full of buds!). The other day I saw a pile of yard trimmings left by the neighboring gardeners and stopped my car to check if I might take some flowers home. These wonderful people had the flowers ready for me by the time I reached the pile :)

I made a couple of time-lapse videos of painting these gifted flowers:

Sketchbook #91: Agapanthus (African Lily) and Cactus

I found two amazing plants to draw: african lilies (agapanthus) of two different colors and a huge cactus! The owner of the cactus was concerned that I am an inspector of sorts - standing there "with the ledger, looking at our plant". Bus I showed him a spread and a smile appeared - together with the joking: "my wife told me to plant this a year ago - not it's taller than me!"
